Canine Parvovirus.

Canine Parvovirus (canine parvoviral enteritis) is a small virus, a single strand of DNA. It is often deadly. Parvo is a number one killer of dogs, mostly puppies. It does not effect humans, only mammals in the candid family, including:  foxes, wolves, coyotes, jackals, and dogs.  Parvovirus gets its name from the Latin word, parvus, meaning small. There are multiple strains, many mammals have a brand of Parvo of some kind, not all are deadly though. There is a human strain, (parvovirus B-19) also known as Fifths disease. It is less potent as canine Parvo, it mostly causes rashes on the skin.

Parvovirus was discovered in the 1970. It is closely related to Feline Panleukopeina which is also a strain of parvovirus. They are 98% the same with only two amino acids that are different. It was first recognized in 1978, when an out break occurred. It spread world wide in less than two years. Four different strains were discovered: CVP2 (1978), CPV2a(1979) , CPV2b (1984), and CPV2c(A mutant version). They mostly the mostly the same, indistinguishable with out thorough testing. Even then it is still difficult to tell. The virus works by causing infections in either the intestines, which is most common, or the lunges, which is less common. The disease is usually contracted from feces. The virus can last on a substance for long periods of time. If not cleaned properly, other animals (domestic or not) can catch it.

Symptoms of Canine Parvo are: lethargy, vomiting, fever, and bloody diarrhea. The infection is not always what kills the canine, it is actually malnutrition and/or dehydration. Another symptom of Parvo, would be a strong feces smell. if your dog exhibits these symptoms take them to a veterinarian immediately. To diagnose the virus, the dogs feces is tested for CPV2. The intestinal form is difficult to diagnose, as the symptoms are indistinct. Parvo could be confused with coronovirus, which also has a symptoms including bloody diarrhea. The cardiac form is easier to diagnose, the symptoms are more unique than the intestinal form.

Vaccinations, are available, but Canine Parvovirus has no none cure at the moment. Antibiotics are used to stop the virus, and infected animals are put on IV's to compensate for dehydration and malnutrition caused by diarrhea and vomiting. If your dog exhibits these symptoms, take them to a veterinarian IMMEDIATELY. This is a deadly illness, home remedies for Canine Parvo are usually absurd, and don't do anything to help the infected animal, sometimes even making things worse. Take your pet to a vet, then go to your house and clean were your dog usually stays and clean with warm water and bleach. Do the same were your dog usually go's outside, and put bleach on any dung you may find. It is not good for the planet, but it will help stop the spread of the virus.
